What do you need to graduate from an Ontario High School?
Students need 30 credits to graduate out of which they must earn the following compulsory credits (18) to obtain the Secondary School Diploma (A Credit and a Course are terms used interchangeably):
• 4 credits in English (1 credit per grade)*
• 3 credits in mathematics (1 credit in Grade 11 or 12)
• 2 credits in science
• 1 credit in Canadian history
• 1 credit in Canadian geography
• 1 credit in the arts
• 1 credit in health and physical education
• 1 credit in French as a second language
• 0.5 credit in career studies delivered at the Gr. 10 Level of study
• 0.5 credit in civics delivered at the Gr. 10 Level of study
Plus one credit from each of the following groups:
- 40 hours of Community Service (volunteer work)
- the Provincial Literacy requirement
NOTE: Ontario students usually take 8 courses each year, grade 9, grade 10 and grade 11, and 6 courses in grade 12 (total of 30 credits). Consideration for equivalencies, as a result of successful completion of previous education, will be given to students who register for admission in grade 10, 11 or 12. Academic documentation will be evaluated and recommendations will be put forth to meet the student's needs. This process also includes those that have completed some post-secondary education (such as College). This is strictly the Principal's responsibility, since s/he is the one who can represent the Province of Ontario to grant credits.
